Crack Filling and Sealing in Milwaukee, WI

Crack filling means cleaning out a crack and packing it with flexible sealant so water cannot reach the base, and in Milwaukee it is the repair that does the most good, because the ground here is prone to heave. The common Ozaukee soils carry a cap of silt over dense glacial till, and water perches on that till 2 to 3.5 feet down for a month or more in most years. Every open crack feeds that water supply. Good crack repair in this climate is timed to the thaw: fill in spring once the March swings are over, then again in fall before November and December bring roughly 25 more freeze-thaw days. Filling always comes before driveway sealcoating, never after.

Frost heave needs three things: soil that wicks water, a steady supply of water below, and cold that reaches down into it. Milwaukee supplies all three. The Oak Creek Formation till that underlies the area tested at about 53 percent silt and 35 percent clay in a 1995 Transportation Research Board study, and silty soils are the frost-susceptible kind. When cold pushes into wet silt, ice lenses grow and lift whatever sits on top. The pavement cracks along its weakest line, and that line reopens each winter as the ice forms and melts again.

Timing matters because filler needs a crack that is dry and open. In March, Mitchell Airport averages about 17 days that freeze at night and thaw by day, the most of any month, and April still has about 6. Crack sealing into a wet crack in early spring traps water under the material. Late April through June, after the swings end and the cracks have dried, is the main filling season, and the Wisconsin Asphalt Pavement Association's owner guide also points owners to spring. A second pass in late September or October catches anything that opened over summer before November's roughly 12 crossings begin.

Hot-pour rubberized sealant, heated in a kettle and run into a crack that has been blown clean with compressed air, stays flexible through cold snaps and bonds to the crack walls. Hardware-store cold-pour filler works on hairlines but can shrink and pull away as a crack opens in cold weather. Wide, deep cracks may be packed partway with backer material first so the sealant is not wasted filling a void. The finished line is either struck flush or left as a slight band on top, depending on whether a seal coat follows.

Crack filling is priced by the linear foot: $0.50 to $3.00 in HomeGuide's national figures, $1 to $3 in Angi's, and $0.50 to $2.00 on one southeastern Wisconsin contractor's 2025-2026 list, with a minimum service charge on small jobs. Because heave cracks tend to cross the full width of a drive, the footage on a long side drive adds up quickly. Ask for an estimated length and a per-foot rate rather than a lump sum, and see the asphalt price table for how this line fits a full sealing bid.

Cracks worth filling on a Milwaukee drive

Walk the drive in April once it has dried out. These are the cracks that need crack repair before another winter gets into them:

  • Straight cracks running side to side across the drive
  • A crack along the joint where the asphalt meets the garage slab or the public sidewalk
  • Cracks along the edge where the drive meets lawn or a neighbor's concrete
  • Any crack wide enough to hold a coin standing on edge
  • Weeds or grass growing out of a crack
  • Earlier filler that has pulled away from one side of the crack

Cracks that join into a network of small pieces are a different problem; that pattern needs patching, not filler.

Fill it, rout it, or cut it out

Width, movement and what the edges are doing decide the method.

Hairline cracks

Fine, stable cracks that do not open and close with the seasons. Clean and fill with rubberized sealant, or let a two-coat seal bridge the finest of them.

Working cracks

Wider cracks that open in winter and close in summer. Rout or clean them back to sound edges and fill with hot-pour material, slightly overbanded, in spring or early fall.

Cracks with heave

Edges stepped up or down, or a hump across the drive. Filler only buys time; the base under that line has to be dug out, drained and rebuilt.

If a contractor proposes filling alligator cracking, ask why a patch was not quoted instead.

Questions

Crack Filling and Sealing FAQs

Is crack filling worth doing without sealcoating afterward?

Yes. The filler does its main job, keeping water out of the base, whether or not a seal coat follows. On a drive that is still dark and tight but has a few frost cracks, a spring crack repair visit alone is often the right spend, with sealing a year or two later. The reverse is not true: sealing over open cracks hides them for a few weeks and leaves the water path in place.

Why did a filled crack open again after one Milwaukee winter?

Three usual reasons. The crack was filled while damp, so the sealant never gripped the crack walls. The movement was more than the material could stretch, which happens where heave lifts one side. Or the crack sits over a base that is failing, and it will keep opening whatever goes into it. A crack whose edges now sit at different heights needs the base checked, not another bead of filler.

Can alligator cracking be fixed with crack filler?

No. A web of small, many-sided pieces means the asphalt has lost support from below, usually because water has softened the base. Running filler into hundreds of short cracks does nothing about the soft layer underneath. That area needs to be saw-cut, dug out, rebuilt with compacted stone and patched with hot mix; the rest of the drive can then be filled and sealed normally.
